In Mac OS X, the man command is configured with a combination of commandline switches, environment variables and settings in the /private/etc/man.conf file.
Under Mac OS X Mountain Lion, the user's bash shell's default configuration does not define a MANPATH variable.
Running man with the -d option provides useful debugging information when trying to figure out what MANPATH is being used.
$man -d sed
